Local LLM Energy Costs Are Higher Than You Think—Here's the Real Math

A new benchmark quantifies the electricity and power draw of running large language models locally on consumer hardware. For SMBs evaluating self-hosted AI versus cloud APIs, the energy cost is the hidden line item that breaks the financial case.

Most SMBs run the numbers on local LLM deployment backward. They check GPU price, maybe add electricity, and assume they’ve found the loophole in SaaS margins. Then the electricity bill arrives.

The new research emerging from university labs quantifies something that felt obvious in practice: GPU power draw and cooling costs are not afterthoughts. They’re the silent destroyer of local-deployment economics.

The Energy Envelope

An RTX 4090—the GPU most dev teams actually run—draws roughly 350–400W under continuous LLM inference load. Run it 8 hours a day? That’s ~$12–15 per month in electricity at US rates. Run it 24/7? You’re paying $35–50 monthly just for power, before the hardware amortization, before cooling infrastructure, before the CPU and memory draw that scales with it.

An RTX 5090 (32GB, the newer card) lands at ~575W. That’s $52/month continuous operation in the US. In Germany or France, where electricity costs double the US average, you’re flipping to €150+ monthly on a single GPU.

Apple Silicon changes the arithmetic. A MacBook Pro M4 Max running inference draws 60–90W total system. That’s $4–7/month 24/7. Here’s the trap: it has 36GB unified memory. For models up to Llama-3-70B quantized to 4-bit (which loses meaningful performance), it works. Scale beyond that, and you need a second machine or a different GPU tier.

When the Math Flips

Electricity alone doesn’t kill the deal. The real death comes when you layer in:

  • Hardware amortization (a $2,000 GPU amortized over 36 months)
  • System power: CPU, RAM, PSU inefficiency add 30–50% to GPU-only figures
  • Data center cooling (0.5–0.7 watts of cooling per watt of compute if you’re not in your office)
  • Depreciation and hardware replacement cycles

For a mid-market team processing 10M tokens per month on a single model, cloud APIs (GPT-4o-mini at $0.15 per million input tokens) cost roughly $1.50. Local hardware with full amortization and electricity lands you at $150–200 per month—100x more expensive at that volume.

That’s why the break-even calculation has a cliff. Below ~100M tokens per month (roughly $1,000–1,500 in cloud costs), local deployment doesn’t pencil. At 500M+ tokens monthly (a production agentic system or batch pipeline), local hardware becomes the only rational choice financially.

Imagine a 30-person SaaS platform building an AI code-assistant feature. Early days: they process 5M tokens daily from their user base. Claude Haiku via API costs roughly $3–5 daily. A local RTX 4090 setup costs $120 amortized plus $15 electricity. The infrastructure team should never deploy it.

Now the product grows. Same team, 50M tokens daily. Cloud is now $30–50 daily ($900–1,500 monthly). The local setup is still $120 hardware + $15 electricity = $135/month. Suddenly, local hardware is obvious. They’ve crossed the threshold.

The Hybrid Win

Here’s what actually makes sense for most SMBs: run a smaller open model locally for your baseline workload, route spikes and high-complexity tasks to cloud APIs. This captures the fixed cost efficiency of local hardware while avoiding the operational burden of managing a full fleet.

A 7B or 13B local model running on a used RTX 3090 or M3 Max handles 80% of your queries at near-zero marginal cost. The 20% that need GPT-4-level reasoning go to the API. You’ve amortized the hardware across your consistent daily traffic and don’t pay API bills for commodity inference.

That hybrid model is where the new energy-efficiency research lands: not
